Senior woman disorientated after escaping an accident in Ludwigshafen - witnesses wanted!

On Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at around 12:40 p.m., an incident occurred in a supermarket parking lot at Goerdelerplatz in Ludwigshafen, which attracted the attention of local police. A witness saw a senior citizen driving a badly damaged silver Citroen C1 out of the parking lot. The woman's condition seemed worrying; she appeared disoriented and confused. According to initial information, the elderly woman stated that she was under the influence of medication and did not remember any accidents. The police were therefore immediately contacted and they also confiscated the lady's driver's license. An ambulance took the woman to a hospital for a medical examination.

The vehicle had significant damage to the front area and the passenger side. This raises the question of whether previous incidents involving the elderly woman are known. In this context, the police are urgently looking for further witnesses or possible victims of a traffic accident that may have occurred between 11:45 a.m. and 12:40 p.m. Information can be sent to the Oggersheim police station on 0621 963 - 24650 or by email to pwoggersheim@polizei.rlp.de.

Accident statistics for seniors: A growing concern

The incident in the parking lot should not be viewed in isolation. General statistics show an alarming trend: According to the Federal Statistical Office, 45,123 people aged 65 and over had accidents in road traffic in 2021. What is particularly worrying is that older road users are disproportionately involved in serious accidents. Their share of traffic fatalities in the same year was a remarkable 33.9 percent, which means that one in three traffic fatalities belongs to the over 65 age group.

Those over 75 are particularly at risk due to their declining physical resistance. This age group is receiving more and more attention when it comes to road safety. It should also be borne in mind that older people are less likely to have accidents than younger people, but they often play a major role in serious traffic accidents.

Previous accidents in the city area

Another fateful incident occurred on January 22, 2025, when a 78-year-old pedestrian was hit by a 65-year-old driver. This accident occurred at 8:09 a.m. on Sternstrasse, house number 106, and resulted in serious injuries to the elderly woman, who was then taken to hospital. In this case, similar to now, the police are asking for information from witnesses who may have witnessed the incident.

Given these frightening statistics and recent incidents, the call for mindfulness on the roads is even more urgent. Seniors in particular need a safe environment so that they can remain mobile without constantly having to fear for their safety. The number of road accidents among older people has reached worrying levels and needs to be urgently addressed to prevent future tragedies.
