Storm surges on the Baltic Sea: Current water levels and warnings!

Today, October 11, 2025, the situation on the coasts of Schleswig-Holstein is tense in view of current water levels and storm surge warnings. How kn-online.de reports that there are storm surges on the Baltic Sea is now a seasonal phenomenon that occurs several times a year. Last season there were seven storm surges. In the following period, from July 2022 to June 2023, the storm surges decreased slightly with a total of five events.

But it's not just storm surges that worry coastal residents. The low water levels are also important: there were four low water events in the 2021/2022 season and two in the following year. The water levels on the Baltic Sea coast vary greatly. The average water level on the Baltic Sea near Kiel-Holtenau is 504 cm, while the highest flood level ever measured is 797 cm, documented on November 13, 1872.

Current water levels and warnings

Today, on October 11, 2025, the following water levels were measured: The Baltic Sea shows values of around 516 cm to 537 cm, while the Elbe is at 678 cm. The Krückau, a smaller river, also reports a level of 635 cm. The exact water levels extend from the various river mouths to the Baltic Sea ports and make it clear how dynamic the situation is on the coasts. The hsi-sh.de provides a comprehensive overview of the current water levels in Schleswig-Holstein.

  • Ostsee: 516 cm (11:40 MEZ)
  • Elbe: 678 cm (11:45 MEZ)
  • Krückau: 635 cm (11:45 MEZ)
  • Nordsee: 677 cm (11:40 MEZ)

Given these values, flood warnings remain active and are issued by the relevant authorities such as the police and fire brigade. The flood control centers in each federal state keep the population informed via warning channels such as radio, television and modern communication technologies.

Precautions and rules of conduct

In areas at risk of storm surges, it is important to follow a few rules of conduct. If flooding is imminent, it is advisable to turn off electricity and gas, move personal belongings to safety and prepare for escape routes. Stocking up on food and drinking water should also be considered. In order to be well prepared in the event of possible flooding, it is advisable to have some emergency numbers ready and to go to high places.

The Federal Environment Agency also points out that storm surges pose a significant risk to coastal areas. Future storm surges could potentially reach higher levels, although the frequency may not necessarily increase. Climate change is causing sea levels to rise, which is further exacerbating the risk of storm surges.

In summary, the weather conditions on the coasts of Schleswig-Holstein are very dynamic and residents should prepare well for separate high and low water events. The combination of storm surges, water levels and appropriate precautions remains a key issue for all coastal residents.
