Rail chaos on the North Sea coast: closure until October 13th!

The popular rail connection between Emden and Norddeich Mole has been closed for two weeks since Monday, September 30, 2025. The reason for this is necessary construction work on the tracks, which will bring all train traffic in this section to a standstill. Loud NDR The closure is expected to last until October 13, 2025 and primarily affects intercity trains and regional express trains (RE).

Affected travelers can expect some changes to the timetable. The RE1 line, which runs from Hanover to Norddeich Mole, ends in Emden. The Norddeich Mole, Norddeich, Norden and Marienhafe stops will not be served during this time. For the duration of the construction work from October 3rd to 5th, all trains between Norddeich and Bad Zwischenahn will be canceled. The train stations in Leer, Augustfehn, Westerstede-Ocholt and Bad Zwischenahn are also affected, meaning that the connection between Oldenburg and Leer is also disrupted. These outages have already been announced for the weekend of October 4th and 5th.

Alternatives for travelers

The Lower Saxony state government is outraged by the traffic restrictions and is criticizing the planning of the construction work. “Such an inconvenience for travelers is unacceptable,” explains a government spokesman, as ostfriesischer-kurier.de reports.

Effects on public transport

VDV passenger numbers have increased again since 2022. Around 26 million passengers are transported every day, which means that public transport represents an important alternative to private transport and therefore also contributes to reducing traffic and emissions.
